Deep River: An Interview With Marian Anderson
A multimedia engagement with Marian Anderson (the first Black opera singer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House) and particularly her rendition of the African American spiritual, “Deep River.” In the performance, Anderson’s recording of the spiritual fills the space, followed by my own live rendition. The performance becomes a call and response across generations–perhaps across the figurative River Jordan of which we sing. The projection features mono-type prints that depict the storied river as well as the Lincoln Memorial where she performed in 1939. Through this project, I sought to foster a spiritual connection between myself and Anderson, honoring her legacy as a creative ancestor.
