ABOUT
Prior to its development into a video installation, the six by eight foot painting Self Portrait, Passing Away, served as a meditation on the process of dying. Through the piece, I inquire about the process of a “self” transforming into an “ancestor.” The silhouetted figure appears to either emerge from, or retreat into the red that surrounds them, contrasted by the video projection on silk, in which the figure in white um-ambiguously faces the audience as she sings. The melody of Calling was improvised when it was recorded, drawing from classical training I received as a vocalist (See Serenade my improvisational song practice). Here, the voice serves as a clarion, beckoning viewers toward the unknown.
