Deep River: An Interview With Marian Anderson

Live performance, video installation, mono-type prints.

A multimedia engagement with Marian Anderson (the first Black opera singer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House) and particularly her rendition of the African American spiritual, “Deep River.” In the performance, Anderson’s recording of the spiritual fills the space, followed by my own live rendition. The performance becomes a call and response across generations–perhaps across the figurative River Jordan of which we sing. The projection features mono-type prints that depict the storied river as well as the Lincoln Memorial where she performed in 1939. Through this project, I sought to foster a spiritual connection between myself and Anderson, honoring her legacy as a creative ancestor.

Walking Alone

Short film, 00:11:12

A short, experimental opera created in December of 2020. A young woman suffers in isolation before being led on journey by diety manifestations of nature and the psyche.

Spending the first year of COVID with my family in our home by Wissahicken Park in Philadelphia, I underwent a process of creative renewal and a return to play. For me the value of this work lies in the manifestation of some of my most fundamental expressive instincts and provides a formal armature for future performance endeavors.

Socialization

Performance, 03:34

A series of nineteen statements performed as an embodiment of the Liberal American ideal. The statements synthesize comments addressed to me about my race, gender and personal philosophy as absorbed from a lifetime spent in white, academic spaces.

The eight foot white silhouette behind me was created in 2019 to serve as a modified projection screen.
